About the Lecture:

Around the world, societies and individuals are grappling with the problem of violence, searching for an alternative. This lecture offers prayer as a solution. It presents three illustrations of individuals who overcame violent impulses through prayer that awakened each of them to their true spiritual nature as a child of God. Through an acknowledgement of wrong, both had major character transformations that resulted in physical healings as well: one of a severely injured hand that occurred during a fist fight, and the other of fractured facial bones from a motorcycle accident, and a medically diagnosed case of diabetes. This lecture also includes an account of an individual that had been shot six times who recognized that his quick and complete recovery included his forgiveness of his assailant. The major thrust of this lecture is to emphasize that evil cannot be defeated with evil, but that it can be overcome and destroyed through our prayers and good efforts.

About the speaker

New York, New York USA — John’s great joy is healing. Here are his words: “There is nothing that compares to the moment of healing, of realizing God’s actuality, and one’s innocence as His child. Healing directly impacts families, friends, neighbors, and communities.” John spent his early years in the Midwest being taught in the Christian Science Sunday School with his brother and three sisters. Later, in his teens, he moved to New York City, where he pursued an acting career, studying with Lee Strasberg and Herbert Berghoff. In his mid twenties, John was healed of a serious drug habit by reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy three times cover to cover. His healing was life altering, and since then he has devoted his life to church participation in a full range of commitments, caring for his family, and his continued spiritual development. John owned a total of nine flower stores in New York City while raising a family of three children with his former wife. In 1985, he sold the last of his businesses and went into the full-time public practice of Christian Science. John is also a teacher of Christian Science. He served for six years as a Trustee of Daycroft School in Greenwich, Connecticut. He has had several articles appear in The Christian Science Journal and Christian Science Sentinel. He also has recorded for “The Truth That Heals” radio series and been interviewed on Sentinel Radio.
